Raw Jade- Texture Test3D ModelNoAI
Today in the Digital Archaeology Lab, our intern Sydney scanned a peice of raw jade. This was a piece from the collection of one of Dr. Victor’s colleauges Dr. Pugh. It is from the Guaytan, San Agustin Acasaguastlan, Guatemala. This site is a source of raw jade, like this piece, and was a mining site of the Maya.
This scan was done as a texture and lighting test to see how well the AR function of Qlone performed. Jade is relatively shiny and under the lights at the Lab, the raw material appeared very grey. The application, however, was able to capture all the fine details of the unworked stone despite the shine, as well as capture the jade’s natural colors that would have appeared, had we been in much better lighting. For many artifacts, shine is something that can inhibit the AR’s ability to render properly the shape and details accurately. As our intern will be working with similar jade samples over the summer, as well as pieces of obsidian, it is heplful to test if Qlone can assist in the field.
