More model informationThe sculpture Sacrifice encapsulates the message at the heart of the Anzac Memorial. Designed by sculptor George Rayner Hoff the sculpture is based on the story of the Spartan warrior from ancient Greece being returned to his loved ones (his mother, sister, wife and child) dead on his shield. It powerfully symbolises the sacrifice made in times of war, both by those who leave to fight and by those left behind.
Sacrifice stands in the centre of the Anzac Memorial’s Hall of Silence. It can be viewed from above with heads bowed looking through the Well of Contemplation, or at ground level, from the eastern vestibule, the western Assembly Hall and the southern foyer that connects to the Centenary Extension.
