Reconstructive hypothesis of a medieval cistern3D Model
In the case of the Mojacar la Vieja (Almería - Spain) reservoir, and taking into account its completely underground character, there is the possibility that the stored water exceeds the limit of the vault start line. This is not usual but due to that buried character, which avoids the possible problems of thrusts that could cause its collapse, it could reach the limit of the vault. However, without taking into account this possibility, it is possible to calculate the volume of water that could be stored in about 172,000 liters (172 m3), approximately. The recharge of the cistern would be done through a rainwater collection system, which has not yet been identified, whose entrance is in the southern wall of the cistern. In this one, a groove is evident that would serve to drive the water inside. Also, it is possible that part of this water was brought manually by bottles and jars.
