Rectangular basket mold loaned from Kerry Wood, Nulhegan Abenaki master basket maker in Vermont. She makes both utilitarian and fancy black ash baskets out of black ash trees and sweet grass gathered from the forest areas in Vermont. This mold was made by Kerry’s husband. It is utilized to make rectangular utilitarian baskets. The string on the top is used to help get the basket of the mold after completion of the sides. The mold also helps ensure that the basket will rest flat on a counter. Kerry was taught how to make baskets from her cousin, master basket maker, Jeannie Brink. She has continued to follow tradition by teaching her son Aaron, and now her grand-daughter, Addy. Traditionally, one learns the history of Abenaki basket making, the meaning of the Ash tree as well as how to process the black ash tree. Then you will make a bookmark. When you have mastered the techniques required to make a book mark you will then proceed to weaving a simple basket. TO8006-DS
