More model informationThis very large anchor stone, about 0.5 m wide, was observed at Smyth Head, a reef net fishing site on the Salish Sea. Given the size of the stone and the hole carved in it, this is likely a canoe anchor stone. A considerable effort would have been involved in pecking and carving the hole, so this would have been a valuable object, lost accidentally.
Reef netting is a uniquely Coast Salish fishing method. It involves setting complex nets between two canoes along constrictions in migration routes of salmon. Thousands of salmon could be caught per day using this method.
