This is the jaw bone of Rehua, an adult male sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) that washed up on Twilight beach within the rohe of Ngāti Kuri in Te Hiku o Te Ika - Far North of New Zealand in 2004. Rehua is a significant taonga for Ngāti Kuri, who have generously loaned him to Tamaki Paenga Hira - Auckland War Memorial Museum to become a feature in our new gallery spaces opening in 2019.
