Remington Model (ca. 1861) revolver, .44 caliber, cap and ball
On July 4, 1874, Captain A. E. Bates led a force of U.S. Cavalry and Shoshone warriors under Chief Washakie into the Owl Creek Mountains (in present day Hot Springs County, WY). The contingent attacked an encampment of Northern Cheyenne, Lakota (Sioux), and Northern Arapaho. Bates and Washakie were forced to retreat, leaving their dead behind. This revolver was picked up on the Bates Battlefield in 1908.
This Remington was the second-most purchased model used in the Civil War (after the Colt Model 1860 Army).
Modeled by Zanna Wright, Curator of Digital Access, WSM.
