Replica Hafted Adze (Catalog # 2002:226.147), a part of the Michigan State University Museum’s Archaeology Teaching Collection. This tool, created by Toby Morrow, is composed of a chert adze attached to a wooden handle using strips of hide and adhesive. Adzes, which first appear in North America during the Late Paleoindian-Early Archaic transition, were hand-held wood-working tools used to cut wood and fashion various wood objects, such as canoes.
