More model informationRetinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells are found in the deepest layer of the retina. These hexagonal cells have long extensions that interact with photoreceptors and other retinal cells. RPE cells perform a variety of functions, including phagocytosis of the outer segments of these photoreceptorsand absorbing scattered light via melanin granules. Given that these cells border the choroid, they also play important roles as a blood-retinal barrier.
