To further our primary research, we went to the middle of Forsyth Park in Savannah to get real answers from real people.

We wanted to know four things:

  1. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of self-driving cars?
  2. What’s your ideal car-riding experience?
  3. (Plotted on a graph) What are your thoughts on self-driving cars?
  4. On a scale of 1-10, would be okay with your car detecting emotions to make you more comfortable?

Park-goers wrote their answers to the first two questions on sticky notes and posted them on the board. For the second two questions, we asked them to plot their feelings on a graph. The third question had two axes: up and down to indicate if they thought AVs would be good or bad in the future, and left or right indicating whether or not they thought AVs are good right now. The last question was on one axis from “not comfortable” to “very comfortable”.

We gathered around 50 responses, and found more users were excited for AVs than we expected.
