A ~100 million years old Richat Structure is a vulcanic dome in Mauritania. If you want to know more information, you will find it under the next link: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261998692_The_eye_of_Africa_Richat_dome_Mauritania_An_isolated_Cretaceous_alkaline-hydrothermal_complex A few month ago with other explorers I been there. Our goal was examine the ruins which are visible in satellite images all around on the Richat.
About the model: First I find an elevation map from the vulcan, georeferenced it in Google Earth pro and export the texture from the exact same location of the elevation map. I changed the RGB colored elevation map into black & white picture in Photoshop, and scaled the color values for keep the elevation informations. In Autodesk Maya i baked the displacement map i got from Photoshop into a simple polyplane with 350* 350 resolution. At the final step I optimize the mesh face number and add some extra feature as thickness and the 3D type.
