More model informationNear the Riņņukalns hillock, on the shore of the River Salaca, is the Riņņukalns Offering Stone. This stone with a hollow is considered to be an ancient sacred place. Riņņukalns, discovered in the middle of the 19th century, became the first excavated Stone Age (Neolithic) settlement in Latvia. This monument is unique: it is a hillock, or midden, consisting of food remains – freshwater mussel shells, fish bones and animal bones. This is the only Stone Age shell midden in the East Baltic. Already in the Neolithic Age the hillock was used as a burial place. Also, 15th-16th c. burials were found during excavation of the hillock and the adjacent settlement.
