That particular sculpture series commemorated the 2015 Northcliffe Bushfire - at that time it had been the largest wildfire in WA’s recorded history. The fire was uncontrolled for 3 weeks and caused extensive damage to private property and the bushland. The town of Northcliffe was evacuated for a week amidst fears it would be burnt to the ground. declared a National Disaster, people from around Australia were flown in to help defend the community and its surrounds.
The artist created 50 artworks for the ‘Rising From the Ashes’ series. Each is cast from someone connected to the fire - either as a fire-fighter, someone evacuated, whose home was lost, business impacted or as a Traditional Owner of Pibelmun Country. These sculpture are scattered along the Understory trail. They are a haunting reminder of the power of Nature as well as the resilience of the human spirit.
