RK18 A00004 is a brick found during the archaeological excavation of the Rooswijk in 2018. Due to conditions of the burial environment, the brick is now encrusted with barnacles and other marine organisms. This brick is just one example of many excavated from the site which were intended for use as building materials once the vessel reached its final destination of Batavia.
In 2016, Dutch and British archaeologists undertook a survey on the site of the Dutch East Indiaman Rooswijk which showed it was at high risk. To address this, a team has come together from Historic England and the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) to undertake an archaeological excavation in summer 2017 and 2018.
