In the canyon of the Kokra river (Slovenia, Upper Carniola) lies a secret hideout. Located just above the riverbed on an almost inaccessible terrace we find an fortified wall (5 x 5 x 0,5-0,6 m) with seven arrowslits and five smaller openings, that is blocking the access to a small rock shelter. Local legends say that the rock shelter was once connected to an larger underground cave network where people hid from Ottoman raids. Archaeological investigations of the site revealed presence of coins and potter from the 15. century as well as evidence of scattered gunpowder and unfired musket ammunition of later date.
The later finds are attributed to robber bands of deserters the so call “Rokovnjači” who terrorized the region in the 18. and 19. centuries.
