Southern Africa is renowned for its abundance of well preserved Rock Art, with the Cederberg especially hosting thousands of rock art sites.
Three Rock Art sites on the banks of the Clanwilliam dam in the Cederberg, South Africa, will soon lie underwater as the height of the dam wall is being raised to increase the full capacity level of the dam. These sites are considered important heritage to the area as the painting were drawn by the San 2000 years ago and represent the way of life of the peoples of those times. The archaeology surrounding the dam, which includes stone tools and other evidence of early human occupation, is currently being recorded by archaeologists. Excavations are underway at each of the rock art sites and surrounding areas.
