More model informationThis 10x20 cm rock sample was collected over 1,800 meters deep from the slope of an isolated seamount at the southwestern limit of the Johnston Atoll EEZ in the Central Pacific. It is likely encrusted with a ferromanganese crust. One of OET’s expedition goals is learning the broad geological history of the Pacific, of which crusts are just one process in the formation of these ancient seamounts. Geologists use chemical analysis of ferromanganese crusts to determine seamount age, learn about water chemistry, and contribute to the bigger picture understanding of the region’s ecology from massive corals to tiny microbes.
