More model informationThis copper-alloy Roman brooch is a rare find from the Hebrides; far beyond the Roman world, items like this were exotic and valued items. This is a very unusual example, not like typical brooches from Roman Britain, and may have come from northern France or western Germany. It worked like a safety pin, but the spring which fastened it is lost. Grooves decorate the head and two inlays, perhaps of colourful glass, adorned the bow, but they are now lost or corroded. Length 44mm.
Found during excavations on an Iron Age settlement at Cill Donnain, South Uist, Scotland.
Accession No.: SF 6 Material: Copper alloy Period: Iron Age/Roman
