This stone was initially believed to be a Roman column, but is now thought to be a Roman altar-stone, dating from the 3rd-4th century CE.
Carved onto the stone is a figure that is believed to depict Mars, god of war. It was apparently unearthed during the construction of the tower in 1440 amongst other Roman stone remains, which includes a piece dating from 270 CE.
The inscription in Latin reads: FLAVIUS VS VOTO SVSCEPTO OMPOSU (OR VOTO ARAM POS) which when translated reads ‘Flavius after fulfilment of his vow set this up’
