Dishes like this one were common features of Romano-British households. Before the time of the Roman occupation, people in Britain seem to have had little need for plates and dishes, but during the Roman period people seem to have developed a taste for new foods better presented on plates. This one, dating to the second or early third century AD, was found at the site of a Roman villa near the modern village of Easton Maudit, Northants.
