More model informationThe gladius was a famous short, cut-and-thrust sword adopted by Roman legionaries which probably first came into contact with the Romans during the 1st Punic War (3rd century BC). Its first specimens probably came from Spain, the so-called gladius hispaniensis, similar to those used by the Celtiberians, and replaced the Greek or Italian-type swords. Other types of gladius were also manufactured by the Romans such as the Mainz gladius, the Fulham gladius and the Pompeii gladius (the most popular). During the 3rd century AD, the longer spatha sword seems to have gained prominence in the infantry and started to replace the gladius.
