Digital reconstruction of the roman monumental arch of Londinium. There is no firm date for the arch though best estimates are around AD 200. It was possibly raised to mark the visit of Emperor Septimius Severus to Britain in AD 208-11.
The reconstruction of the arch is based primarily on the special paper “The Roman riverside wall and monumental arch in London”, published by the London & Middlesex Archaeological Society in 1980. Researchers were able to piece the fragments together and understand the overall shape of the arch as well as much of its decoration. Whilst many of the patterns and motifs were evidenced in the fragments, large areas were missing and a certain amount of informed speculation from wider sources was necessary to fill in the gaps.
A color scale illustration depicting the level of historical/archaeological evidence available is shown on annotations 2 and 20.
