More model informationPlaque marking the route of Roman Road (route 421) from Bitterne to Chichester erected on the Freemantle Common, Bitterne (Southampton, Hampshire). An excavation involving 4 trenches in 1968 confirmed the presence of the road. The plaque is situated close to Trench 4 which gave a fine exposure of the metalling (Johnston & Reed 1968 Proceedings Hants Field Club). Route 421 linked the Roman settlements at Chichester and Clausentum along the Itchen River, Bitterne.
