More model informationA Roman steelyard weight in the form of a bust probably of the god Jupiter. The lower portion of the weight is lost to old damage such that only a fragment of the bust’s shoulders remain. This object is particularly similar to a bronze bust found close to the west gate Venta Belgarum near Winchester that has been identified as a bust of Jupiter (Biddle and Henig 2018) which shares the same facial features, beard and hair on the reverse of the head. There are now at least 29 examples of steelyard weights in the form of heads on the database found from across England.
