More model informationCeramic, England, 250-299AD. This jar is approximately 23 cm tall and has an internal volume of about 4 litres (7 pints). Medium sized storage jars like this were an important staple of any kitchen and could be used to hold a wide variety of ingredients, liquid or solid; including water, oil, flour and dried fruit. This example has simple criss-cross decoration scored into the surface around the widest point. It is made from rough grey clay that is tough and hard wearing. Although it is not possible to say where it was made for certain, it is most likely that it came from Dorset. Model by Historic England Geospatial Survey Team
