“Nativity of Mary” Wooden Church of Rona de Jos Structure ID: EWAP1026LG-STR-017-RON
The wooden church of Rona de Jos was constructed using horizontal wooden beams with half lap joints on a stone foundation. On the floor level, the plan is composed of a semi-open porch on the western side, a narthex, a nave with a choir and a rectangular sanctuary. On the first attic level, there is an open gallery on the western side of the tower, where the first set of bronze bells are stored. Above the narthex, there is a hidden storage room accessible by descending from the attic gallery. The attic and tower are partitioned in a total of five accessible levels, the last one being the second tower gallery with another bronze bell. The access into the church is through the porch, on the western side. The edifice has many spectacular architectural features, such as the wing-shaped console beams, the “eyes” that were cut into the porch walls, the double roof and tall nave, and the composite iconostasis.
