This is the remains of a rotwood tree. Rotwood is known for the foul, acrid odor it produces, and the sludge that oozes from its orifices. It attracts insects that are usually drawn to carrion, trapping them in the sludge and dissolving them. Poison mushrooms often grow in its vicinity.
