Atlthough this site is now a coastal feature, sited on the southern shores of the South Ford between South Uist and Benbecula, it was orginally an inland feature. The South Ford only opened to the sea in the post Bronze Age when the site then started to erode.
Since then the site has continued to erode, particularly on the northern side which faces the iopen channel and would be at risk from westerly gales sweeping through. Much of the general cairn material has been lost from this side, leaving the former kurb stones exposed on the bedrock base. Some of the stones associated with the former access passage can be seen bursting through the turf.
It is impossble to be certain if the smaller cairn stnes were lost to sea erosion, or from recycling by later people into other structures locally.
