Rudolf von Alt was an Austrian painter and watercolorist. As the son of the painter Jakob Alt, he grew up in the former Viennese suburb of Alservorstadt. His younger brother Franz Alt was also a painter. Rudolf Alt studied with his father and colored his lithographs as a child. Between 1825 and 1832 he attended the Vienna Academy and became a member in 1848, but this was only imperially confirmed in 1866.
Rudolf von Alt is considered the most popular artist of the 19th century in Vienna. He created more than 1000 watercolors, capturing the Austria of the time Alone 100 times he drew the St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
