Fossil turtle from the DISTAV collections (University of Genova).
This fossil turtle has been found near Sassello (Liguria, NW Italy). During the Oligocene epoch,
approximately 34 to 23 million years ago, large part of modern NW Italy was covered by shallow
waters hosting an impressive biodiversity with a diverse array of turtle species. The warm,
shallow marine environments of this period provided ideal conditions for these reptiles, which
thrived in both coastal and freshwater habitats. Fossil evidence indicates the presence of
various marine turtles, including some related to modern taxa, as well as freshwater species
that inhabited lagoons and river systems.
This model was realized by Glenda Cantale during the Universal Civil Service (SCU) at the Genoa University.
