More model informationThis ceramic u-bend pipe is from W.H. & J. Slater, a Derby building firm operating from the end of the 19th century until 1982.
The pipe is salt glazed, meaning that common salt was thrown into the kiln during a higher temperature part of the firing process which gives the resulting pottery a shiny appearance. Salt glazed pipes sewer pipes, including u-bends, were commonly used during the Victorian era after social reformer Edwin Chadwick’s support for improved sanitation resulted in improvements.
