Samian Bowl, Balmuildy, Antonine Wall3D Model
A Samian ware bowl (form 30), found at Balmuildy, in 12 fragments, of which 4 parts were used to reconstruct the complete bowl as seen. The bowl is 11cm high by 12.5cm in diameter.
It carries a maker’s mark ‘CINNAM’, indicating that it came from a workshop (MANU CINNAMUS) in Lezoux France. Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.
