Samos Closed Controlled Access Centre (CCAC)

This model reconstructs the Samos CCAC near Vathy. Opened in September 2021 as the first EU-funded Closed Controlled Access Centre, it combines reception and pre-removal detention functions in a high-security environment.

Developed as part of the Detention Landscapes project, this forensic reconstruction visualizes the spatial mechanisms of state violence. The facility isolates asylum seekers in a prison-like structure featuring double “NATO-type” fencing, turnstiles, and extensive CCTV surveillance. Due to strict access restrictions, the model relies on architectural inference, official reports, and testimonies to reconstruct the site.

The architecture reflects documented conditions of severe restriction, including water rationing, remote isolation from essential services, and zones of confinement.
