More model informationOne of North America’s most temporally unique artifact types, Sandal Sole Gorgets are a diagnostic ornament of a little understood Late Archiac people commonly called the ‘Glacial Kame’, and are found across NW Ohio, NE Indiana, Michigan and Southern Ontario.
Cut from Whelk and Lightning Whelk that live along the Gulf and Southeast Shores, these artifacts illustrate far flung and well developed trade routes over 3500 years ago. The opposing spirals of these two Whelk species allowed Archaic artisans to craft ‘right’ and ‘left’ Soles, described historically as ‘pairs’.
