SANIGHTAAQ: Yupik Ceremonial Gut Parka 3D Model
This parka, made from seal intestine cured in Artic winter winds, is decorated with seal fur and auklet beaks and feathers which contribute to its power. It is stitched with reindeer sinew probably acquired from neighboring Chukchi. Parkas from summer gut are waterproof and practical while winter gut is sacred for ceremonial use.
The parka was collected by Waldemar Bogoras during AMNH’s Jesup North Pacific Expedition (1897-1902).
