More model informationA piece of breastplate is cast from the calcareous marine concretion that formed around the original, degraded iron artifact. It was found on the wreck of the Spanish galleon Santa Clara, sunk in 1564. This fragment represents the upper, right side of a breastplate, where the neck opening, shoulder, and arm opening came together. It has an iron rivet that once held a buckle for the leather strap that joined the breastplate to a backplate. This piece is approximately 10 centimeters x 9 centimeters. It is 3.5 millimeters thick, though the folded edges are thicker; the edges along the neck and arm openings look to have been doubled.
