More model informationAn olive jar rim, neck, and shoulder. Spanish colonial era ships frequently carried amphora-like earthenware jugs called “olive jars” (botijas in Spanish) to hold wine, oil, & vinegar. These egg-shaped jars were roughly 50 centimeters tall by 30-40 cm in diameter. The 1564 galleon Santa Clara carried at least 130 olive jars. Most of the jars broke when the ship was wrecked, but we know the number by tallying the surviving rims. This olive jar rim has an outside diameter of 8.7 cm, and stands 3.6 cm tall, above the shoulder.
