More model informationMade from leather folded over and stitched along its edge, this scabbard (cover for a sword or dagger blade) has two holes. These are possibly for attaching it to a belt.
It is decorated with engraved and stamped patterns.
One side features rosettes in a hatched background with a line of heraldic lions. Another side features a chequer design with a line of heraldic lions. Another side displays rosettes in a hatched background.
Many pieces of medieval leatherwork like this were excavated from the moat at Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway between 1955 and 1966. These are some of the finest found in Scotland.
