I do enjoy scanning difficult objects and this was no exception. Half the object is aluminum, so photogrammetry wasn’t going to give a decent model. Still, I needed a decent albedo just to get me a base texture to play with. I relied on april tags around the object for alignment in reality capture despite the low number of tie points due to the metal. For geometry, scanning this using the Artec Space Spider was a good solution. Spraying it with sublimation spray helped reduce the noise on the model. Most of the work was manually setting up material IDs, then creatively masking the text and other important elements using ZBrush and Substance Painter.
Still, the model isn’t flawless. There are normal map issues on fine edges and tiny crevices that I will endeavor to avoid on subsequent scans.
