Schooner Advance (Built 1853)3D Model
ADVANCE was built by well-known shipwright J.M. Jones in Milwaukee in 1853. The vessel spent most of its career in the lumber and grain trades, sailing throughout the Great Lakes region. ADVANCE continued sailing through the Great Lakes until 1885 when the vessel capsized and sank in a gale while approximately southeast of Sheboygan. The vessel encountered a leak during the storm and it eventually became so waterlogged, it capsized. Before the sinking, the vessel’s captain and crew were able to make it aboard the yawl boat, however, the yawl capsized in the breakers close to shore, unfortunately leaving only one survivor. Today ADVANCE sits in 85 feet of water, 9.5 miles south of Sheboygan. Although the vessel is broken up and sits flat on the lake bottom, many of its hull and rigging components remain on site, including much of the forward deck planking, the windlass, samson post, bowsprit and jibboom (with wire rigging attached), and a section of the vessel’s main topmast.
