The Trinidad was a 140 ft., schooner built at Grand Island, New York in 1867 by shipwright William Keefe. She was primarily used in the grain trade between Milwaukee, Chicago and Oswego, New York. She was lost in May of 1881 shortly after passing through the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal with a cargo of coal for Milwaukee.
On May 13th, 1881 at 4:45AM she was off Algoma when she was found to be leaking catastrophically. Despite her crew’s heroic efforts at the pumps, she plunged to the bottom about 10 miles from shore taking all the crew’s possessions and the captain’s pet Newfoundland dog with her.
The Trinidad now lies in nearly 300 ft. of water off Algoma, Wisconsin. She was located in July of 2023 by Brendon Baillod and Bob Jaeck and later surveyed by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin.
