Scottish Basket-Hilted Broadswords were based on developments of late medieval arming swords, additional quillions provided better hand protection. Early versions were produced as early as the 1500s, rising to great popularity in the 1600s, though by this time there was regional variation in the design. They continued to be produced and used into the 1700s, though by the 1800s and these designs were primarily only used by Scottish Highland regiments in the UK. Such swords are still used for ceremonial purposes by these regiments today.
