Early Christian monastery of Seir Kieran (Saighir Chiaráin/ St. Kieran’s Seat on the edge of a stream) founded by St. Kieran the elder in the fifth century. All that survives of this high cross is a truncated pyramidal-shaped base with rectangular socket into which the shaft of the cross, now lost, once stood. The sides of the cross-base contain biblical scenes along with decorative panels. The biblical scenes include Adam and Eve, David with the Head of Goliath, Three Children in the Fiery Furnace, Cain Slaying Abel, and the Sacrifice of Isaac. The base of the high cross stands in the centre of Seir Kieran graveyard with the C. of I. Church to the east and the ruins of a 13th century Augustinian Priory with corner Gun Turret of 16th century date to the north. High Cross text provided courtesy of Peter Harbison. The carvings on this model are best viewed in Matcap. For more information on the Seir Kieran High Cross, visit: https://maps.archaeology.ie/HistoricEnvironment/?SMRS=OF039-003002-
