Lengi vel var algengt að hross voru höfð utanhúss, nema ef um var að ræða bestu reiðhesta. Á 19. öld virðist vera breyting á þessu en þær hesthúsatóftir sem hafa verið fornleifaskráðar eru flestar frá þeim tíma. Fátt er vitað um hesthús fyrr á öldum og fá hafa verið rannsökuð með fornleifafræðilegum aðferðum. Þau hafa ekki áberandi einkenni og því erfitt að þekkja þau frá öðrum húsum eins og t.d. smiðjum eða hrútakofum. Oftast eru þetta litlar byggingar, 5-7 m á hvorn veg.

Horses were usually let roam free outside and it was not common to keep them in stables, except for the best riding horses. This changed in the 19th century as most of the stables discovered are from that period. Little is known about stables from earlier periods, and few have been a subject of archaeological research. They don’t have any prominent features and are therefore often indistinguishable from other buildings, such as workshops and ram sheds. Generally, these were small buildings, reaching around 5-7 meters.
