This project was conceived as a collaboration between Factum Foundation and the Fundacion Casa Ducal de Medinaceli to record the white marble sepulchre created by sculptor Alonso Berruguete in 1552 for the Hospital of San Juan Batista (better known as the Hospital Tavera) in Toledo, Spain.
The objective of the first phase in 2018 was to record the sepulchre using different methods (photogrammetry, LiDAR and structured white light scanning), in order to create an accurate 3D model of its current state. The sepulchre was damaged during the Civil War and plaster fragments from the only cast of the original have been since kept in storage within the Museo Nacional de Escultura, in Valladolid.
The sepulchre of Cardinal Tavera was rematerialised as a facsimile for the new Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland, opening in October 2021.
