Serpentinite (+ peridotite) (metamorphic rock)3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Romania
Size: 9 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm
Type: Metamorphic rock
Description: Named from Latin “serpens”, a serpent, alluding to the appearance of snake skin. Serpentinite is a fibrous ± vein-type, nonfoliated, green-black metamorphic rock composed predominantly of serpentine minerals (see serpentine subgroup). Serpentinite is a metamorphosed ultramafic rock. Serpentinite forms at the expense of olivine- and pyroxene-bearing rocks. In the current sample can be seen also the parent rock (peridotite - which is a ultramafic igneous rock/meta-igneous rocks).
Essential minerals: serpentine subgroup (e.g. antigorite, lizardite), magnetite.
Non-essential minerals: chlorite, talc, brucite, magnesite, tremolite, calcite, relics of various types, etc.
