Hybodus reticulatus is an extinct shark that lived in the Jurassic seas that once existed where England now lies. This palate would have been positioned along the roof of the shark’s mouth and was used for biting and tearing apart prey.
This specimen was in Elizabeth Philpot’s collection. Mary Anning also frequently found fossil shark teeth along the beach at Lyme Regis. In a letter to fellow fossil collector Sarah Kennaway, she listed “palates of fish” amongst the extensive array of fossils that she had found locally.
