This shelter, possibly late medieval in date, would have provided a much-needed roof for people or goods from the huge waves that can blow in from the Atlantic and overtop the pier wall. This is why it has a granite roof - the waves can be huge!
The metal barriers stacked in here made internal scanning impossible.
