Sherford mortuary structure 3D Model
This limestone mortuary structure was discovered in the centre of a round barrow during excavations at Sherford, Plymouth, Devon. A series of orthostats (upright stone) were positioned around the outside and had a decorative function. The feature was devoid of artefacts, although once the stones were removed piece by piece, a remarkable discovery was made. A complete inverted Early Bronze Age food vessel was discovered beneath the western end. The vessel contained the cremated remains of a middle-aged male who was potentially a person of importance in his community to be commemorated in such a way after death. The remains of a singular copper-alloy knife were also found with the burial. More info is found on our blog.
