西洋の自動演奏装置を真似てつくられた楽器。ハンドルを回すと紙製の曲譜が進み、孔のあいた部分に空気が通って演奏されるしくみで、音色はアコーディオンに近い。戸田欽堂が考案し、1884年（明治17）に銀座の十字屋が販売して大人気となった「紙腔琴」の類品である。

An instrument made in imitation of a Western automatic music-playing device. The music sheet moves on as the handle is turned, and the in-strument plays as the air flows through the holes. It was first sold in 1884 at Jūjiya of Ginza, and it became extremely popular. There was another similar instrument known as the “Shikūkin”.
